Species at Risk Act (SARA) Section 11 Conservation Agreement for the Conservation of the Southern Mountain Caribou

The Minister of Environment and Climate Change, the Honourable Catherine McKenna, and the Honourable George Heyman, Minister of Environment and Climate Change Strategy for British Columbia, have announced a draft conservation agreement (the “Agreement”) under the federal Species at Risk Act regarding recovery measures for the Southern Mountain Caribou in British Columbia.

The overarching goal of the Agreement is to articulate the actions the Parties will take over the next five years to support the long term objective of achieving recovery of self-sustaining populations of the Southern Mountain Caribou in British Columbia in line with the outcomes outlined in the federal Recovery Strategy for the Woodland Caribou, Southern Mountain Population (Rangifer tarandus caribou) and in consideration of the rights of directly affected First Nations. The initial focus is on the Central Group, which consists of the Pine, Narraway and Quintette Local Population Units in Northeastern BC, covering large areas roughly centered along a line from Williston Lake to Kakwa Provincial Park and Protected Area.

Comments received will help inform the final content of the Agreement, as well as possible future arrangements between Canada and British Columbia and with directly affected First Nations concerning the Central Group and other groups of the Southern Mountain Caribou in British Columbia.

We thank everyone who provides comments. All comments will be considered. The final version of the Conservation Agreement will be posted on this site when completed, along with a summary of comments received.

Note: Given the level of interest, the consultation period for the Agreement has been extended from January 5, 2018 to January 19, 2018 to provide interested parties with sufficient opportunity to comment.

Consultation period: 2017-11-27 to 2018-01-19
