Shumard oak (Quercus shumardii) COSEWIC update status report: chapter 11

Summary of Status Report

When the status of vulnerable was assigned in 1984, Shumard Oak was known from numerous sites in Essex and Kent Counties, and one location in Elgin County. Since that time, it has been discovered atseveral sites in Lambton County and in the Niagara Regional Municipality. Nonetheless, the geographic distribution is still very restricted in Ontario. Many of the locations consist of single trees in fencerows, fields, or along roadsides. Most of these sites are very vulnerable and show little or no regeneration. Three sites occur in protected areas.

At present, there are only about 40 records of occurrences based on specimens collected within four counties (Essex, Kent, Elgin, Lambton) and in the Niagara Regional Municipality. The total number of trees is likely <<1000 and may not even exceed 250.
