Description of critical habitat of Haller’s Apple Moss in Jasper National Park of Canada

The Haller’s Apple Moss (Bartramia halleriana) is a species listed on Schedule 1 to the Species at Risk Act as threatened. Critical habitat for Haller’s Apple Moss is identified within the final Recovery Strategy for the Haller’s Apple Moss (Bartramia halleriana) in Canada.

Notice is hereby given that, pursuant to subsection 58(2) of the Species at Risk Act, critical habitat of Haller’s Apple Moss in Jasper National Park of Canada is described as the habitat known to be occupied by the species plus the adjacent habitat areas that are required to maintain the microclimate conditions needed to support the population’s persistence (usually extending approximately 100 m from the population), within the following two sites, save and except areas where the required habitat attributes are not located and existing infrastructure that will persist on the landscape (e.g. roads, railways, buildings). Parcel numbers are based on the unique Committee on the Status of Endangered Wildlife in Canada (COSEWIC) species identification number for Haller’s Apple Moss (689), and critical habitat parcel number. All coordinates below refer to the North American Datum of 1983, UTM Zone 11. Further details regarding Haller’s Apple Moss critical habitat (including maps) can be found at the Species at Risk Public Registry Web site.

Within the identified geographical boundaries, the biophysical attributes of critical habitat include the following: non-calcareous talus deposits, bedrock outcrops, or cliffs with crevices and ledges; closed canopy forest cover and understory vegetation that maintains the cool, moist microclimate; and seepages.

Being all that parcel of land, and lying within the southwest quarter of Section 24, Township 45, Range 4, West of the 6th Meridian,

Commencing at a point at Northing 5860364 metres and Easting 402385 metres;

Thence, 117° in a straight line to a point at Northing 5860242 metres and Easting 402624 metres;

Thence, 207° in a straight line to a point at Northing 5860058 metres and Easting 402530 metres;

Thence, 297° in a straight line to a point at Northing 5860079 metres and Easting 402488 metres;
